Damage to G.R. Building Closes Sidewalk and Alleyway

Damage to the historic Thurston Building on Front Street in downtown Grand Rapids has closed the south sidewalk and alleyway until it can be repaired.
Looking at the 1896 structure from below, a section of brick has separated from the northeast turret on the second floor.

Neighbors say Dr. Dorinda Shelley, owner of the property, is working to have the brick work repaired.
The Thurston Building was built in 1896 by Azor Thurston, an analytical chemist, author, and pharmacist. The Romanesque building operated as a pharmacy until 2011. After its closure, Dr. Shelley, purchased the property and reopened it as Antiques on Front.
