Suspect Arrested in Shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Written by on December 9, 2024

NEW YORK — Police have arrested a suspect linked to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, thanks to a tip from a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, was detained Monday morning while eating at the restaurant. Authorities found a weapon believed to be used in the ambush, along with writings indicating his anger toward corporate America.

Mangione, a Maryland native with ties to San Francisco and Honolulu, had items matching those worn by the shooter, fraudulent IDs, and a ghost gun—a weapon assembled without a serial number. He also carried writings that police say shed light on his motive.

Thompson, 50, was fatally shot last Wednesday while walking to a Manhattan hotel. The shooter, lying in wait, used a 9mm pistol with a suppressor.

Mangione is being held in Pennsylvania on gun charges and will face extradition to New York to answer for Thompson’s death. NYPD officials credited the public and news outlets for disseminating the suspect’s images, leading to the critical tip.
