Maumee River Swells, Floods Low Areas After Heavy Rains

GRAND RAPIDS, OHIO — The Maumee River is roaring after a week of steady downpours, swelling beyond its banks and flooding low-lying areas along its path, including popular campgrounds near Grand Rapids.

As of Saturday morning, the National Weather Service reported the river level at just over 12 feet in Grand Rapids—placing it in the “Action” phase. While this is below the “Minor Flooding” threshold of 17 feet, it’s enough to flood the river’s floodplain, including areas like Providence Park where the lower trail is now underwater—something that’s typical for this time of year.

In neighboring Waterville, the situation is slightly more intense. The Maumee has officially reached minor flood stage there, nearing 11 feet, which is already causing problems for anglers in town for the popular Walleye River Run.

Drone footage captured Saturday morning shows the river running fast and high—nearly level with the dam—offering a dramatic look at just how much water has surged through the area.

Rain is expected to taper off by Saturday night, with forecasts calling for a much drier week ahead, bringing some relief to those impacted along the river.
