Towpath Radio North Coast Big Band Returns to Grand Rapids for Rhythm on the River

GRAND RAPIDS, OH — A beloved local tradition is set to swing back into town as the North Coast Big Band makes its 24th appearance in the Rhythm on the River Arts Series on Sunday, August 24, 2024, at 4:00 p.m.
The free outdoor concert, presented by the Grand Rapids Historical Society, will take place at the Wright Pavilion on the towpath between the canal and the Maumee River, just behind LaRoe’s Restaurant. In the event of rain, the performance will move to the Old Fire Station on Front Street.
Formed in 1987, the 16-piece big band — led by Gary Keller — was born when members of the North Coast Concert Band began staying after rehearsal to read through big band charts. Since then, they’ve built a repertoire celebrating the golden era of swing, performing music made famous by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Artie Shaw, along with jazz, pop, and arrangements by local artists. The group features 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a rhythm section of bass, piano, and drums.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, browse Grand Rapids’ shops, enjoy local dining, and spend a summer afternoon by the river.
