Towpath Radio Grand Rapids Joins Northwestern Water and Sewer District

GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio — The Village of Grand Rapids has taken the next step toward joining the Northwestern Water and Sewer District after the district’s Board of Trustees approved the village’s membership application on July 23.
The approval follows a July 13 vote by Grand Rapids Village Council to petition for membership.
Village officials said the decision was driven by several long-term challenges, including maintaining aging infrastructure, recruiting and retaining licensed water and wastewater operators, meeting financial obligations and planning for future growth.
“Growth in the Village may require additional sewer plant capacity and addressing that need on our own would create a financial burden. We really considered the long-term responsibility of maintaining the system on our own,” said Grand Rapids Mayor John Berry.
District officials said the move will provide the village with access to licensed operators, specialized equipment and long-term planning resources designed to strengthen the reliability of its water and sewer systems.
“While many communities seek District membership only after infrastructure has reached a critical point, we appreciate the foresight shown by Grand Rapids leaders. By acting now, the Village is taking a proactive step to improve and protect its water and sewer system,” said District Board Chairman Douglas Miller.
A 90-day transition period will now begin as District and Village staff work together to inspect the system and develop transition plans. Residents may notice additional District vehicles and crews in the area, but officials say there will be no immediate changes to utility billing, customer service or outage reporting. Any future updates regarding rates, billing or contact information will be shared as they are finalized.
