North Coast Big Band Returning to Rhythm on the River Aug. 23

GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio — The Grand Rapids Historical Society’s Rhythm on the River Arts Series continues Sunday, Aug. 23, with the return of the North Coast Big Band.

The free concert begins at 4 p.m. at the Wright Pavilion, located along the towpath between the Miami & Erie Canal and the Maumee River at the end of Lincoln Street behind LaRoe’s Restaurant.

Now making its 26th appearance in the concert series, the 16-piece ensemble performs under the direction of Gary Keller. The band’s repertoire features classic big band favorites made famous by Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, along with selections of swing, jazz and pop music from multiple decades.

The North Coast Big Band was formed in 1987 by members of the North Coast Concert Band and includes five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, bass, piano and drums.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the outdoor performance. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Old Fire Station on Front Street.

Admission is free and open to the public.
